SAN DIEGO, March 21 /PRNewswire/ -- LightPointe, a designer and manufacturer of optical wireless products based on free-space optics (FSO) technology, today announced plans to bolster North American operations by relocating its German-based engineering and manufacturing functions to its San Diego corporate headquarters. The move reinforces LightPointe's focus on the enterprise networking and mobile wireless markets and its goal of leveraging abundant engineering expertise in the San Diego area while accelerating time-to-market of next-generation outdoor point-to-point wireless products.
By aligning its engineering and manufacturing efforts with other company departments in San Diego, LightPointe will improve cross-functional team communications, efficiency and productivity, while cutting duplicative costs and lowering overall operating expenses. The relocation begins immediately and will be complete by June. LightPointe will also begin hiring additional engineering and manufacturing staff in support of its San Diego-based expansion. The move will allow the company to quickly respond to growing enterprise demands for secure and reliable wireless connectivity solutions and improve the time-to-market of its next generation product family.
According to Jim Cady, LightPointe president and CEO, the decision to concentrate operations at headquarters is the next logical step in the company's evolution. "We've gained considerable traction in the enterprise and mobile wireless markets, and we are ready to increase our development efforts to build upon the company's intellectual property," he said. "Because San Diego is a hotbed of innovative wireless development, our local team will be able to expedite the delivery of highly innovative networking solutions that are transforming outdoor wireless communication."
To that end, LightPointe recently raised an additional $15 million from a world-class group of existing investors, including Rho Ventures, Sevin Rosen Funds and Ampersand Ventures. "The additional funding and alignment of our operations will drive the marketing and demand generation of patented next-generation outdoor wireless products that will be unveiled this spring," said Cady.
LightPointe will continue to maintain a significant international presence with its growing regional sales and support offices located throughout Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, China, and Asia Pacific. The company has also applied further emphasis on building worldwide distribution channels in support of its global sales and marketing efforts.
LightPointe serves both the enterprise market and mobile wireless service provider market with optical wireless products for specific network applications including LAN-to-LAN data connectivity, VoIP, video, CAD, PACS, disaster recovery, redundancy, mobile wireless backhaul and mobile wireless network extension. LightPointe's wireless products have earned high marks for bandwidth capacity up to 1.25 Gbps. The company's growing roster of blue-chip customers encompasses some of the world's best-known brands, such as Toyota, DHL International, Jazz at Lincoln Center, 24 Hour Fitness, Volkswagen and CNN. All LightPointe products are license-free and use beams of light to transmit voice, data and video through the air. Entry-level models are available for less than $10,000 (USD).
