Nokia Launches GSM Mobile Phone Handsets in Japan

Tokyo, July 15 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese unit of Nokia Oy of Finland said Tuesday it has launched in Japan two types of mobile phone handsets that can be used abroad.
The Nokia 5100 module will be sold for 49,800 yen per unit, while the Nokia 6610 model is priced at 39,800 yen, targeting as users business people who frequently fly abroad, Nokia Japan Co. said.
The Nokia handsets are based on the global system for mobile communications, or GSM, standard, the second-generation mobile phone format popular in North America, Europe, Africa and the Asia- Pacific region excluding Japan and South Korea.
In Japan, second-generation mobile phones services are provided in the personal digital cellular, or PDC, format, unique to Japan.
