Texas Instruments Delivers Enhanced Voice Over Cable Software for Cable OEMs

Posted on: Thursday, 24 March 2005, 12:00 CST

DALLAS, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) today announced software enhancements for its voice over cable (VoCable) technology equipping embedded multimedia terminal adapters (EMTAs) with improved support for fax machines and end telephone equipment and offering a better user experience. The new software additions meet the requirements established by the CableLabs(R) PacketCable(TM) initiative, which promotes technology development to support a wide range of multimedia services, such as IP telephony, multimedia conferencing, interactive gaming and general multimedia applications.

TI's new software enhancements support the latest PacketCable 1.5 specification that defines the call signaling, quality of service (QOS), codecs, client provisioning, billing event message collection, Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) interconnection and security interfaces for residential IP voice services. These newest improvements also allow broadband telephony subscribers to more reliably send and receive faxes over VoCable services, provide cable modem manufacturers the framework for battery backup capabilities in cable modems for uninterrupted power supply (UPS) during power outages and enable service providers to monitor voice metrics and adjust for real-time voice quality. With these software upgrades, cable equipment manufacturers can easily provide the most complete voice-over-cable broadband modems.

"Our latest software release is driven by input from field deployments," said Irvind Ghai, director of marketing for TI's cable products. "These new features will fuel the continued growth in this young market as consumers continue to realize the benefits of VoCable technology."

Leading cable EMTA provider ARRIS has demonstrated their leadership in the marketplace by successfully combining TI software with the experience and intellectual property that ARRIS has accumulated while deploying over 4.8 million lines of voice to service providers worldwide.

"Collaborating with TI on the newest PacketCable specifications and new features to address real deployment requirements ensure that our products will continue to deliver the best performance available for voice-over-cable systems," said Bruce McClelland, VP of Engineering, ARRIS.
