Autistic Boy Banned From Church

Posted on: Monday, 19 May 2008, 18:00 CDT

A Minnesota mother whose church has a restraining order against her 13-year-old autistic son, says she chose to go to a new church to avoid jail.

Carol Race attended mass at a new church after Todd County Sheriff Pete Mikkelson appeared in her driveway Sunday to warn her she would be taken into police custody if she and her son went to the Church of St. Joseph in Bertha, Minn., the Star Tribune reported Monday.

The Rev. Daniel Walz, of St. Joseph, said Race's son Adam, who weighs at least 225 pounds and is more than 6 feet tall, was extremely disruptive and dangerous and posed a threat to the congregation, the Minneapolis newspaper reported.

Race said Walz does not understand how to handle her son's disability and her family is still deciding if they will find a new church for good.

It was reported Race was set for court Monday after receiving a citation for breaking the restraining order by bringing Adam to St. Joseph on Mother's Day.

The other articles said and people in the church stated that the church offered them help, a room with live video feed, coming to their home, and the family said no. Personally I have nothing against autistic children but if the kid and he is no kid standing at 6'0 and 225 lbs ok? Causing trouble, hitting people, knocking them over and whatnot. Perhaps they need to, what does he need to do next? Run up the aisle and knock people over who are receiving communion and drink the whole cup? I think not. For the safety of the people, he needed to not go.

I hope God is mad. Banning anyone from church is bad and worst when its a disabled person. The Church should make special provisions to help this boy not bann him.
