Motorola has won a $90m contract from India’s largest telecoms service provider BSNL to provide network equipment and support services for the carrier’s expansion of its GSM network in southern India.

BSNL plans to add 33.5 million mobile lines by the end of March 2009. In April, it said it had a capacity of 36 million GSM lines and 5.5 million CDMA lines. The expansion will give BSNL additional capacity of 2.3 million subscribers to its existing GSM network in the southern region.

Subhendu Mohanty of Motorola India said: “BSNL has chosen Motorola to address its critical 2G network expansion requirement. This year marks 20 years of Motorola’s commitment to the Indian market and we are proud to be a part of the telecom growth story.”
