SAN FRANCISCO, April 4 /PRNewswire/ -- THE NATIONAL CABLE SHOW -- BigBand Networks, Inc., a leading provider of network platforms for video, voice and data services, today announced that Cox Communications Inc. is using the BigBand Cuda(R) CMTS (cable modem termination system) for several of its most recent Cox Digital Telephone launches based on VoIP (voice over IP) technology. The third largest cable operator in the United States, Cox has completed deployments based on the Cuda in Lafayette, Louisiana and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
"We were pleased to discover that we could utilize VoIP capabilities on the incumbent BigBand Cuda CMTS platforms in Lafayette and Tulsa for the Cox Digital Telephone launches," said Jay Rolls, Cox Communications vice president of telephone and data engineering. "The use of VoIP by Cox extends our commitment to providing subscribers with the most advanced offerings over the most efficient networks, and BigBand Networks plays a vital role."
The Oklahoma and Louisiana VoIP deployments extend a long record of collaboration by BigBand Networks and Cox Communications. The operator has been a Cuda customer since 2000 including its use as the incumbent platform for high-speed data services in both of the VoIP launch sites. Cox is also a customer of the BigBand BMR(R) (Broadband Multimedia-Service Router) on which it has launched advanced digital video services across the country such as HDTV, digital advertising insertion, and Gigabit Ethernet transport of video.
"These VoIP launches present another opportunity for BigBand Networks to proudly work with Cox Communications on the most advanced cable technology initiatives," said Amir Bassan-Eskenazi, president and CEO of BigBand Networks. "Cox continues to be a leader in setting the industry's agenda, and our collaboration on VoIP validates the BigBand Cuda's outstanding capabilities in the platform characteristics required for reliable and high quality services to large audiences."
The BigBand Cuda12000 is a high-capacity platform with several features that optimize performance for offering multiple IP services at fast connectivity. These include PacketCable(TM) 1.1 compliance to assure quality-of-service by securing required bandwidth, the highly reliable MeshFlow(TM) platform architecture that maximizes service availability, and optimizing RF (radio frequency) performance of signals to overcome plant impairments. The platform provides foundation for differentiating and expanding service offerings such as support for rapid launches, a best-in-class redundancy design that ensures availability for reduced subscriber churn, and superior RF spectrum management and carrier-class IP switching and routing for the best performance. These capabilities are particularly beneficial for launching robust VoIP integrated with high-speed data services.
