Global Crossing Launches Ethernet Private Line Service, Expanding Ethernet Services Portfolio

Posted on: Monday, 4 April 2005, 09:00 CDT

FLORHAM PARK, N.J., April 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Global Crossing today announced its Global Crossing Ethernet Private Line(TM) service, delivering premises-to-premises connectivity for bandwidth-intensive business applications. The company's robust portfolio of Ethernet services, interface options, and access capabilities enables customers to leverage the scalability and flexibility of Ethernet.

"Customers will benefit from the simplicity and management ease that Ethernet Private Line delivers, leveraging rapidly scalable premises-to-premises connectivity for their critical business needs," said Anthony Christie, Global Crossing's chief marketing officer. "Our Ethernet services portfolio addresses the growing market demand for Ethernet-enabled interfaces, with a clear migration path towards converged IP services."

Ethernet Private Line provides connectivity for a wide range of applications used by enterprise customers, including hosting, resource planning, business continuity, content distribution and disaster recovery. The service also supports high-bandwidth operations such as large data transfers, medical imaging, record archiving, database sharing and replication, and remote office access to application servers.

Carrier customers will leverage Ethernet Private Line to peer with other networks in remote exchange locations without the expense of a physical presence.

"Ethernet is a critical area of service innovation characterized by double-digit annual demand growth for the foreseeable future," stated Stan Hubbard, senior analyst at Heavy Reading. "With the addition of Ethernet Private Line to its portfolio, Global Crossing now offers a robust suite of high performance Ethernet services providing customers with a range of cost-effective and flexible service options for both access and long-haul transport requirements, enabling a smooth migration to a converged IP solution."

Customers can leverage Ethernet Private Line's rapidly scalable bandwidth on demand, through Global Crossing's account management portal uCommand(R). This easy-to-use interface allows for online ordering and bandwidth upgrades over the existing connections.

Ethernet Private Line service is backed by the Service Level Agreements (SLAs), security, redundancy and reliability of Global Crossing's SONET/SDH network, and it is currently available in major cities throughout North America, the United Kingdom and Europe. The service will be available in other regions in the second half of this year.

Ethernet services and interfaces help improve operational efficiencies by eliminating the requirement for specialized premises equipment, reducing provisioning complexity and simplifying onsite management. All Ethernet IP and Ethernet Private Line services support a seamless transition to a converged IP environment at the customer's own pace.

In addition to Ethernet Private Line, Global Crossing also recently announced its Ethernet IP service, enabling customers with multiple corporate locations to simply extend their local area networks (LANs) across the wide area network (WAN). Ethernet IP service allows customers to establish seamless, high-speed connections between two sites, whether across town or around the world.

Global Crossing's Ethernet services portfolio consists of Ethernet IP, Ethernet Private Line, and Ethernet Metro Access, which includes the company's 25 metro city rings and the facilities and local access of its 50 partners. Global Crossing's IP VPN, VoIP and Internet Access services are all Ethernet-enabled for Fast-Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet connections.
