Ocean Tomo to Auction Patent on 26 June Related to System for Optimizing Computer Turn-on and Shut-Off
Posted on: Friday, 30 May 2008, 09:00 CDT
Ocean Tomo Auctions today announced that it will offer for sale U.S. Patent 5,745,391 related to a user-friendly, modern system for turning on and shutting off a computing device while automatically saving and restoring its memory. The patent, with an early priority date of 1995, will be offered as Lot 11 at The Ocean Tomo 2008 European Live IP Auction to be held at The Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky in Amsterdam on 26th June.
The technology disclosed in the '391 patent simplifies a computer's start-up and shut-down procedures allowing the user to decrease the amount of time spent waiting for system and application software to load. By saving and restoring the internal state of a computing device to and from non-volatile memory in an automatic method, the user is able to resume his work from the exact point it was abandoned.
"The modern computer user is either turning their computer on and off on a daily basis and, thus, spending a good deal of time waiting for their systems and programs to launch, or worse yet, they are just leaving their computers on and wasting energy, paying higher utility bills and producing a negative environmental impact," said Yakov Topor the Inventor. "According to a number of energy reports, including the PC Energy Report 2007, activating the 'hibernation' mode, as described in the '391 patent, on a regular basis can result in a substantial difference in energy and cost savings not to mention much greater ease and convenience."
The device comprises a control switch, separate from the power on/off switch located on the computing device or its peripheral parts, and this control switch accepts "on" or "off" commands from a user, which are transmitted to the latch circuitry. These on and off commands can be received from a remotely-located central controller and can travel across a network.
"Ocean Tomo is very excited to offer this patent in the European Auction," said Andrew T. Ramer, President of Ocean Tomo Auctions. "Since the technology disclosed in the '391 patent provides for greater time efficiency and energy-saving capabilities, with broad applicability to personal computer users as well as businesses, this portfolio presents a valuable acquisition opportunity for personal computer manufacturers, computer software providers and others."
