J-COM Field Trials Entropic Technology to Deliver High-Speed Internet Service

Chip company Entropic Communications enjoyed a successful field trial with J-COM, Japan's largest broadband and cable company, to deliver high-speed Internet service to its customers at 100Mbps speeds using the standard, pre-existing coax wiring.
J-COM, which operates 19 local cable companies throughout Japan serving nearly 2 million subscribers, has conducted field trials with Entropic's c.LINK-270 chipset since last November. During these tests, J-COM engineers established the viability of converting fiber-to-the-home content and sending it to multiple outlets over existing coax cabling via the Entropic technology.
"Entropic technology offers us an exciting new way to distribute high-speed Internet using familiar, pre-installed wiring," said J-COM vice president of engineering and technical operations, Kanji Kotake. "Entropic's technology enables us to offer more subscribers, more choices, with greater quality and flexibility."
J-COM is competing to deliver "triple-play" services in Japan -- cable television, high-speed Internet, and telephone -- by increasing its subscriber base and working with technology leaders such as Entropic to leverage its existing infrastructure.
"There is a great need for just this kind of approach in Japan where there is a hunger for higher speed broadband services to the home and where many people live in multiple dwelling units or MDUs," said Entropic president and CEO Patrick Henry.
"With Entropic's technology, J-COM will distribute its high-value content and provide Internet service using the coax wiring that's already installed in the building with increased quality, signal and speed. This lets them provide customers with more services."

About Entropic Communications
In addition to providing a bridge between fiber and coax in homes and apartments, Entropic's c.LINK-270 chipset, when built into a variety of consumer electronics such as set-top boxes, digital video recorders, and televisions permits seamless networking over the existing coaxial cable infrastructure at speeds as high as 270Mbps. The high speed and reliability of coax make it the ideal medium for networking high-bandwidth applications such as video.
Entropic is a founding member of the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA(TM)), formed to standardize technologies for linking consumer entertainment devices over existing coax cabling. Other members include Cisco Systems, Comcast, EchoStar, Matsushita Electric (Panasonic), Motorola, RadioShack Corporation, and Toshiba. For more information: www.mocalliance.com.
