Synergy Research Group Announces Q1 2008 Ethernet Switch Market
Synergy Research Group (SRG) announces the availability of Synergy’s Q1 2008 Ethernet Switch Market Share report, which shows the Worldwide Ethernet Switch equipment market declined 4.7% sequentially and 7.3% year over year. A few segments in the Ethernet Switch market demonstrating notable sequential and year-over-year growth were SOHO/Consumer, Fixed 10 Gig, and Modular 10 Gig.
Q1 2008 Worldwide Total Ethernet Switch Revenue Rankings Rankings Q-Q change Y-Y change ——– ———- ———- Cisco 1 -3.70% 6.94% 3Com 2 0.52% 16.42% ProCurve 3 2.46% 27.42% Nortel 4 -24.59% 2.46% Foundry 5 -14.17% 7.05%
The SOHO/Consumer Ethernet Switch market posted a sequential increase of 2.8% (+36.7% y-y) due largely in part to ProCurve’s 32% sequential increase in revenue for the segment. ProCurve’s revenue gain was driven by a 71% increase in Unmanaged Gig port shipments.
The Fixed 10 Gig market also had a very healthy quarter growing 9.1% sequentially and 97.3% y-y. Nortel, ProCurve, Cisco and 3Com all contributed to the growth in this segment, which is being driven by the demand for higher bandwidth for aggregation. Sequential growth for Cisco, 3Com, Nortel, and ProCurve in this space was 10.3, 23.7, 34.8 and 11.6%, respectively.
Cisco (22% q-q), 3Com (14% q-q) and Enterasys (57% q-q) all played a role in the sequential growth of the Modular 10 Gig Switch market, which climbed nearly 15% sequentially and 63% year over year. Revenues for Cisco rose 22.35% in the quarter; as a result, its market share grew 4.9 market share points. Revenues for Enterasys and 3Com grew 57.51 and 14.13%, respectively. This market continues to be driven by data center consolidations and virtualization, VoIP, and the growth of video.
Meanwhile, the Carrier Ethernet market declined 8.9% sequentially but grew 6.8% year over year. Despite the sequential decline, Extreme posted 41.6% revenue growth in the quarter. The fast-paced growth of peer-to-peer applications and video traffic, combined with initiatives to lower costs, will continue to fuel the growth in this segment.
