AMD Unveils Opterons for One-Socket Servers

June 4, 2008

Advanced Micro Devices has introduced three new processors for one-socket servers and workstations.

It said the Quad-Core AMD Opteron 1300 processors, built on AMD’s direct connect architecture, have front-side bus architectures for high-performance computing systems. The Opteron 1300 Models 1352, 1354, and 1356 processors offer 2.1GHz, 2.2GHz, and 2.3GHz respectively.

Patrick Patla, director of server and workstation business at AMD, said: “From entry-level servers and complex workstation environments to some of the largest supercomputers in the world, the new Quad-Core AMD Opteron 1300 Series processors are designed to address the key customer priorities of performance, performance-per-watt, and performance-per-dollar.”

OEMs including HP and Dell are planning to incorporate the processors into their platforms, while supercomputer developer Cray will ship Quad-Core AMD Opteron 1300 Series processor-based Cray XT4 systems.

The chips are available in 1,000-unit shipments at $377 for Model 1356, $255 for Model 1354, and $209 for Model 1352.
