REGINA - Canada's privacy watchdogs want young people to be more aware of where their personal information goes when they punch it into websites such as Facebook or MySpace.
Saskatchewan privacy commissioner Gary Dickson says youths are naive about the kind of long-term impact releasing personal information over the web can have on their lives.
Personal data, such as e-mail addresses and Internet surfing patterns, can be bought and sold by companies looking to hawk their goods directly to young people.
Dickson also says most privacy policies on websites are written in a way that kids can't understand, so they don't know who will have access to their personal information
Dickson is chairing a meeting of provincial privacy commissioners in Regina this week at which the issue is being discussed.
The commissioners have resolved to work toward increasing awareness of how the Internet and privacy don't necessarily mix.
