Fujitsu Launches Itanium-Based Computer Server

Posted on: Wednesday, 6 April 2005, 18:00 CDT

Tokyo, April 6 (Jiji Press)--Fujitsu Ltd. said Wednesday it has launched the same day a new line of high-end computer servers based on Intel Corp.'s microprocessor called Itanium 2, simultaneously in Japan, Europe and the United States.

The Intel Architecture server, dubbed Primequest, is equipped with Fujitsu's new chipset designed for Itanium 2. By applying the 90-nanometer processing technology on the new chipset, Fujitsu has managed to reduce the size and power consumption of the servers to about half of comparable models offered by its rivals, Fujitsu said.

Typical application areas for Primequest, designed for Microsoft Corp.'s Widows operating system and the Linux operating system, include large-scale database systems and online transaction processing environments, according to Fujitsu.

The servers are available in two types--Primequest 440 that can mount up to 16 CPUs and Primequest 480 that can mount up to 32 CPUs. Primequest 440 is priced at 21.8 million yen, and Primequest 480, at 41.8 million yen.

Fujitsu aims for sales of 10,000 units globally over the next three years.

Akira Yamanaka, Fujitsu's corporate vice president of the systems products business group, said the company hopes to grab more than 15 pct of the global market for high-end servers priced over 100,000 dollars within three years.

The Primequest servers will be made at a Fujitsu plant in Ishikawa Prefecture, in northcentral Japan.END
