Fairfax County Public School Provides Memoir to ‘Project Opportunity’ Students
WASHINGTON, June 5 /PRNewswire/ — Bryant Alternative High School in Fairfax County helps more than 60-70 teen mothers work toward their educational goals each day. The program, entitled “Project Opportunity,” provides various support services to the girls, including parenting classes, job readiness and life skills. This semester, the program provided another kind of support by using grant money to purchase nearly 100 copies of a memoir entitled Glori, based on the life experiences of a former teen mother, Nicole Lynn Lewis. Each girl participating in the program has received a copy of Glori as well as staff members.
“The young mothers identify with Nicole,” says Elizabeth Link, Director of Project Opportunity. “They share a strong connection with her and truly appreciate the support that Glori offers.”
Lewis knows first-hand the struggles that teen parents face. In Glori, readers follow her through the tremendous difficulties as well as the rewarding triumphs of surviving — and succeeding — on her own with a baby at 19-years-old. With elements of homelessness, poverty, oppressive relationships, drugs, violence, isolation and doubts, Lewis found herself in a situation similar to that of many teen mothers. However, what follows is what makes Lewis’ story unique. Through relentless work, sacrifice and bull-headed determination, she goes on to earn two degrees, purchases her own home and pursues a rewarding career.
“Glori shows these girls that anything is possible,” says Lewis. “That’s why I’m so impressed with Project Opportunity. By providing copies of Glori to their teen parents, they are giving them hope for a better future. It’s really amazing.”
