Free Broadband Set Up in Libraries

FREE broadband internet has been launched at Southland district libraries, giving young and old throughout the region a chance to connect.

The Government-funded service is available at Winton, Te Anau, Riverton, Lumsden, Otautau and Wyndham libraries and Stewart Island might receive a kiosk later.

Computer cameras are also provided giving users the opportunity to Skype with family and friends anywhere at no additional cost.

Council head librarian Lynda Hodge said it might sometimes be necessary to limit sessions to 15 minutes to ensure fair access for all users but she expected there would be sufficient computers available at all times.

The scheme is a part of a trial for the Aotearoa New Zealand People’s Network, which is about providing free access to broadband internet services in public libraries.

The idea began in the United Kingdom where more than 4000 public libraries had taken it up.

Invercargill City Libraries manager Keith Harrington said it was considering joining the scheme when it became more established.
