Fairchild Semiconductor to Discuss Power Conversion Efficiency at Portable Power Developer's Conference

Posted on: Monday, 11 April 2005, 12:00 CDT

Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE:FCS) technologist Alan Elbanhawy will present "Is Power Conversion Efficiency Running Out of Steam as a Comparison Tool?" at the Portable Power Developer's Conference (PPDC) being held April 18 at the Hyatt Hotel in San Jose, California. The presentation, scheduled between 10:00 A.M. and noon during Plenary Session 1.2, will examine the utility of power conversion efficiency in evaluating the performance of power supplies.

"The evaluation method for power conversion efficiency is particularly relevant for the PC and telecommunications markets," according to Elbanhawy, director of computing and telecommunication at Fairchild's Advanced Power Systems Center. "As the output voltage of DC/DC converters moves steadily toward the sub-one Volt range, power conversion efficiency is simply not an accurate gauge of power converter performance."

Elbanhawy's presentation will introduce a new concept called Effective Loss Resistance that provides a more accurate alternative to current power conversion efficiency evaluations as a means for characterizing DC/DC converter performance, virtually independent of output voltage.
