STORAGE NETWORKING WORLD - PHOENIX, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Engenio Information Technologies, Inc., a global provider of innovative and highly scalable modular storage systems for the open enterprise, today announced the industry's first 4-Gigabit per second (4Gb/s) enterprise-class Fibre Channel disk storage system and Storage Performance Analyzer(TM) (SPA(TM)) software. The new 4Gb/s arrays provide up to two and a half times the performance of Engenio's previous flagship product and SPA will enable companies to improve storage system performance by identifying and isolating bottlenecks throughout the SAN that impair storage system performance.
Engenio's model 6998 4Gb/s Fibre Channel storage system is the industry's first generally available disk storage system based on the 4Gb/s Fibre Channel protocol. The new system takes advantage of the full backwards compatibility that comes inherent with 4Gb/s technology; and offers advanced features and functionality such as snapshot, remote volume mirroring and volume copying, which are crucial for enterprise customers.
Systems based on the 6998 controller will have wide applicability throughout the enterprise. 4Gb/s Fibre Channel systems are ideally suited for applications such as streaming video on demand; medical imaging; data mining and data warehousing; and large databases driven by online transaction processing (OLTP). Large increases in online data created by applications like radio frequency identification (RFID) will drive the utilization of this type of technology.
"Engenio is ahead of the curve by developing, testing and making available its leading storage systems supporting 4Gb/s technology," said Tony Asaro, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. "The availability of SPA software will provide IT professionals with the ability to analyze SAN performance and isolate areas of concern to ensure that maximum throughput is always achieved. Together, these offerings will enable medium-to-large enterprises to improve storage system performance, lower overall maintenance costs and have more time to spend analyzing mission critical data to make informed business decisions."
Engenio's Storage Performance Analyzer software is designed to enable companies with large and complex networks of servers and storage systems to easily identify and improve bottlenecks throughout the SAN. Real-time performance of a storage network can be compared with past results to diagnose performance issues, enabling companies to quickly and easily take preventative action.
SPA software is a stand-alone program that complements SANtricity(R) Storage Manager software and can monitor everything from HBAs, SAN switches, RAID controllers down to individual disk drives. The benefits of SPA software include: maximizing efficiency of the storage network; maintaining optimum levels of productivity; anticipating and eliminating performance bottlenecks; and isolating maintenance issues.
"Customers are always trying to find new ways to do more with their data," said Steve Gardner, Engenio Director of Product Marketing. "Our two offerings, 4Gb/s Fibre Channel arrays and SPA software, enable customers to spend more time analyzing their data without having to wait for it to move from the storage system to the server. Engenio's 4Gb/s disk arrays and SPA software improve information flow and put the power of information into the hands of users more quickly."
