SANBlaze Technology Introduces 10 Gb ATCA Rear Transition Module for Sun Netra(TM) Server Blades

SANBlaze Technology, Inc., a leading provider of storage solutions for the embedded computing market, today announced the SANBlaze SB-ARTM400, a rear transition module (RTM) that provides 10 Gb and 1 Gb Ethernet I/O expansion for Sun Netra(TM) server blades.

The SB-ARTM400 offers six Ethernet data-path ports, four of which are derived from the Sun-developed ASIC for 10 GbE multi-threaded networking technology.

“The Sun-developed ASIC for 10 GbE multi-threaded networking technology is ideally suited for multi-core CPUs and virtualized OSs that have come to typify telecommunication deployments,” said Raju Penumatcha, Vice President of Netra Systems and Networking at Sun. “Virtualization multiplies the number of physical processors to produce 2x, 4x or even 10x the number virtual server entities, each with its own applications and processor threads. With two 10 Gb ports, two 1 Gb ports, and 24 independent DMA channels, the 10 GbE multi-threaded networking ASIC is specifically designed to manage the compounding effects of virtualization, allowing our customers to harvest maximum server blade throughput in multi-threaded environments.”

The functional density of the single 10 GbE multi-threaded networking device left enough spare area on the RTM to add two more 10 Gb ports driven via XAUI. Access to all six Ethernet ports is made on the rear panel via small form-factor pluggable (SFP/SFP+) modules.

The SB-ARTM400 allows Netra blades to move I/O outside the chassis with the same ease and speed that it moves it across backplane fabrics.”

In addition to six 10 Gb and 1 Gb Ethernet ports, the SB-ARTM400 includes a pair of RJ45 management ports, and is fully compliant with ATCA shelf management software. It will be generally available beginning July 2008. Preview the product at NXTComm 2008 in Sun Microsystem’s booths SL5909FF; GP 9, 10, 11 and 12; and in its modular data center — GP5; as well as in SANBlaze’s booth SL5909V.
