Expand Networks Terminal Services Optimization Solution Enables BurrellesLuce to Significantly Improve Network Performance

Expand Networks www.expand.com, a leading provider of application acceleration solutions over the Wide Area Network (WAN), today announced that BurrellesLuce has successfully implemented Expand Network's RDP acceleration technology to optimize terminal services performance. By utilizing Expand's industry leading RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) optimization technology, BurrellesLuce has been able to achieve significant network improvements.
BurrellesLuce, a leading provider of media relations planning, monitoring and measurement services, needed a solution to optimize their remote desktop protocol (RDP) sessions over the WAN and reduce their bandwidth utilization while maintaining or decreasing current costs.
Joe Sacino, Senior Network Engineer, BurrelesLuce, was tasked with finding the right long-term solution to fix these current issues while taking into account BurrellesLuce's future expansion plans. "When all is said and done, no one could have pulled this off, except for Expand Networks," said Sacino. "Unlike other vendors Expand Networks was the only one that could guarantee RDP compression and optimization and prove it."
After doing exhaustive research and looking at offerings from Expand Networks and other vendors such as Juniper Networks, Silver Peak, Citrix and FatPipe, Sacino decided to implement Expand Networks Accelerator series.
"Most of the options we were faced with did not address RDP acceleration - in price or performance," said Sacino. "During our testing phase, we deployed two Expand Accelerator 6940s and one Accelerator 6930. On average, we got 90% compression on our RDP traffic."
By using the Expand Solution, BurrellesLuce's bandwidth utilization dropped from 90% to 40%, allowing additional users to access the network and for other key IT projects like storage replication to begin. BurrellesLuce has also seen demonstrable improvement in network throughput, capacity, operations and application response times.
In addition, BurrellesLuce significantly increased terminal services performance on its low speed and broadband links. "Now we can use low-speed links such as DSL in our remote locations to run up to 12 RDP sessions on wide screen monitors. We can show more on the wide screens than before, and use thumbnails to improve our employees' experience whereas before they had to use dropdown menus. This was impossible to do before Expand," added Sacino.
"By choosing Expand Network's packet aggregation and terminal services compression technologies, BurrellesLuce is able to realize its goals of improving application, network, and user performance. Expand is pleased to be an integral part of BurrellesLuce's IT initiatives," said Andrew Mullen, Vice President Americas Sales, Expand Networks.
