Dell recaptures No. 2 spot in worldwide notebook PC market
LOS ANGELES, June 13 (Xinhua) — U.S. computer maker Dell has recaptured the No. 2 spot for global notebook PC shipments, thanks to its refocus on retail sales and growing business in China, a market research firm said Friday.
Hewlett-Packard remained on the top of the list while Taiwan- based Acer slipped one spot to No. 3 in the first three months this year, according to DisplaySearch.
DisplaySearch said in its quarterly notebook PC shipment and forecast report that 31 million units were shipped in the first quarter of 2008 worldwide, as the notebook PC market increased 35 percent over the same period last year.
HP shipped a total of 6.46 million notebooks worldwide in the period compared to Dell’s 4.68 millions. The Silicon Valley giant has held over 20 percent of the global market for the last six quarters.
The research firm said Dell’s reclaiming of the NO. 2 spot by a 15 percent market share is thanks to a refocus on retail sales and a special focus on growing business in China.
The last time Dell held a 15 percent share of the global market was in the fourth quarter of 2006, before Acer passed Dell for the runner-up spot in the fourth quarter of 2007.
Meanwhile, Apple climbed one spot to No. 7 on the list in the period after the company has been stuck in No. 8 for one year. The Mac Book maker shipped 1.43 million units in the first quarter this year, up 61 percent over the same period last year.
But even with such a year-over-year gain, Apple isn’t the one on the list with the largest growth. Taiwan-based ASUS, which currently holds the No. 8 spot on the list, shipped 1.33 million notebooks form January to March this year, 67 percent more than the same quarter last year.
The list ranks manufacturers in the following order based on number of global units shipped: HP, Dell, Acer, Toshiba, Lenovo, Fujitsu-Siemens, Apple, ASUS, Sony, and others.
