MRV Debuts 10-Gigabit Wireless System for Carrier Ethernet Access
MRV COMMUNICATIONS, INC. (Nasdaq: MRVC), a leading provider of products and services for WDM and optical transport, metro Ethernet, fiber optic components, 10GE, out-of-band networking and other optical networking products, today announced the carrier capabilities of its TereScope(R) TS-10GE free space optics (FSO) system, which offers service providers a 10G Ethernet wireless option for network access and last mile applications.
This free-space optics system, along with the rest of MRV’s diverse array of carrier packet optical transport products, will be on display at the NXTcomm08 show in Las Vegas from June 16-19th in MRV’s booth #SU6507.
The TS-10GE, the world’s first commercial 10-Gigabit Ethernet FSO system, sets a new benchmark for wireless transmission speed and provides carriers with a cost-effective last mile and fiber-to-the-premises access system in areas with no fiber infrastructure.
This latest TereScope device continues the product legacy that has led to MRV’s market leadership in FSO and uses the company’s innovative proprietary optical technology. Like its lower-speed predecessors, the TS-10GE enables the delivery of Ethernet private line (EPN), point-to-point Ethernet (E-Line) and point-to-multipoint (E-LAN) services as defined by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) but at full 10 Gbps line rate in addition to other fractional speeds.
The ultra-narrow beam emitted by the TS-10GE optical head offers the same security as a traditional wired connection and has a range of up to 850 meters in clear weather. In the event of a loss of line-of-sight, the TereScope TS-10GE can be connected to an MRV 10/100 RF solution to maintain redundancy and offer 99.999% uptime.
“The interest we’ve had from carriers in 10-Gigabit access solutions is growing as enterprises adopt this technology internally and demand the same performance from their WAN backbones. With the TereScope 10GE, carriers can now serve more of these enterprises with a wireless solution,” said Noam Lotan, president and CEO of MRV Communications. “This is possible in a Metro Ethernet network to a much greater degree than in a SONET/ATM network thanks to the error handling capabilities of the protocol.”
MRV’s other 10G Ethernet access system is the OptiSwitch(R) 930, the industry’s first 10-Gigabit Ethernet fiber demarcation device, which is located at the customer premises but is owned and operated by the carrier. The single rack-unit device features three 10GE hot-swappable XFP LAN/WAN (10GE/OC192) interfaces and a full suite of advanced carrier Ethernet features including hierarchical QoS, dynamic bandwidth and traffic management optimization and end-to-end OAM service management.
Pricing and Availability
The 10GE TereScope TS-10GE will be available in the second half of 2008. More information about the TereScope family and its capabilities is on the MRV website at www.mrv.com.
About TereScope
The TereScope family of free-space optics (FSO) products provides cost-effective, high-speed wireless connectivity for a variety of last-mile applications. This increases the overall optical budget, which increases link range and reliability. Operating at data rates of 1.5 Mbps to 10 Gbps, TereScope systems do not require right-of-way or government permits for installation and are deployable in a day, providing communication links for service providers or enterprises in hours instead of weeks or months. With more than 7,000 links deployed worldwide, MRV has the most experience in the market at selling, installing and servicing FSO equipment.
