Taking a Stand: Two Stillwater Children Raise Money to Fight Cancer With Lemonade Stand

By Laura Wilson, Stillwater NewsPress, Okla.

Jun. 16--Lemonade stands and summer go together.

Two Stillwater children are using one to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Parker Franklin, 6, and his sister, Lydia, 4, are participating in Sunkist's "Take a Stand" program, in which the company sends out free lemonade stands to children who will use them to raise money for charity.

"I'm on lots of Yahoo group reading lists and someone sent a link to the Sunkist site, so we signed up," said their mom, Pascha.

Parker told why he wanted to have a stand and what he would do with the money, and the company sent them the cardboard stand, some advice about selling and a list of charities in case they needed help choosing one. Parker didn't need any advice about picking a charity, though. He knew where he wanted the money to go, his mom said.

"He wanted to do whatever it was that had to do with cancer," she said. "I said, 'There's the American Cancer Society,' and he said, 'That one. That's the one I want.'"

Parker explained that he picked ACS "because I don't like cancer."

His uncle, Ron Lopez, former Oklahoma Wranglers quarterback, was diagnosed in 2007 with stage 4 non-Hodgkins lymphoma. After chemotherapy and radiation, the cancer was gone.

Parker and Lydia will sell their lemonade to help fund ACS's fight against cancer every Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. for seven weeks at 401 E. 14th. They held their first sale last week.

They are charging 75 cents for a cup of lemonade. At the end of the seven weeks, their mother said, they'll donate the money they've raised to the American Cancer Society.
