Omnitron Improves Security of Carrier Ethernet NIDs With SNMPv3

June 17, 2008

Omnitron Systems Technology (www.omnitron-systems.com), a provider of Carrier Ethernet demarcation devices and media converters, today announced compatibility with Simple Network Management Protocol Version 3 (SNMPv3) for the iConverter(R) family of products. SNMP is an interoperable standards-based protocol for network management, and SMNPv3 provides secure access to network devices by a combination of authenticating and encrypting packets over the network.

The iConverter family of MEF certified Network Interface Devices, managed media converters and CWDM Multiplexer/De-multiplexer products, provides carrier-grade fiber optic access in First-Mile FTTx broadband networks, Metropolitan Area Networks and Enterprise LANs. Support for SNMPv3 enhances the security of network management at the Customer Premises demarcation point.

“Security, authentication and encryption are important factors in the management of Carrier Ethernet Business Services”, said Doug Baar, Omnitron’s Vice-president of Engineering. “In a typical Carrier Ethernet network, the demarcation equipment is exposed, and can be used by an attacker to gain access to the provider equipment. The consequence of an attack could be significant, as the intruder could snoop the management traffic, mimic it (spoofing) and take over the equipment and infrastructure,” continued Baar. “The SNMPv3 upgraded products are able to be managed via Omnitron’s NetOutlook(R) network management software, or any other third-party SNMP software,” he added.

As business and commercial applications continue to place an increasing reliance on the telecom network infrastructure every day, it is vital for service providers to protect their infrastructure assets. Omnitron’s implementation of SNMPv3 provides this protection by applying an additional layer of intelligence to its managed devices, thereby preventing attackers from gaining access and affecting the network’s infrastructure, configuration and operation. SNMPv3 provides this with several important security features:

— Message integrity to ensure that a packet has not been tampered with while in transit.

— Authentication to verify that the message is from a valid source.

— Encryption of packets to prevent snooping by an unauthorized party.

All iConverter products are covered by a lifetime warranty and 24/7 technical support with no service contract fees. For more information about iConverter media converters, please visit www.omnitron-systems.com or stop by Omnitron’s booth at NXTcomm, #SL5012.
