Brazilian army to help legalization of land ownership in Amazon
RIO DE JANEIRO, June 17 (Xinhua) -- The Brazilian military will participate in government actions to help the legalization of land ownership in the Amazon rain forest region, the Minister of Strategic Affairs Roberto Mangabeira Unger announced Tuesday.
Unger said the legalization of land ownership is a priority as the Amazon region faces legal insecurity.
Unger explained that the government's move, the "Sustainable Amazon Plan," will simplify legislation in order to make it easier for farmers to acquire full ownership of property.
The military is currently involved in several activities in the plan and could contribute to this task, the minister added.
Land legalization is among the first measures implemented by the plan, which was developed in the Amazon rain forest region. Other measures, according to Unger, will include helping local farmers live on forest products and protect the environment at the same time.
