In case you missed it, Stefano Grande, executive director of the Downtown BIZ, has expressed an idea that may scare the dickens out of people who like their privacy. In a column in the Winnipeg Free Press, Grande wrote: “Imagine a network of all the best cameras available both private and public integrated, monitored and working together. Imagine all the downtown private security patrols and the BIZ’s Downtown Watch members connected via radio, communicating to each other on an hourly basis, both acting in a preventative and reactive manner. Imagine a network of thousands of downtown workers and residents acting as additional eyes and ears, connected simultaneously with their BlackBerrys, communicating safety concerns to this network. Imagine this network trained by the WPS (Winnipeg Police Service) in higher levels of security and surveillance.”
