NEC Electronics America Introduces Trio of CPU Peripherals
Enhancing its lineup of CPU peripherals, NEC Electronics America, Inc. today introduced three new application-specific standard products (ASSPs) that provide cost-effective solutions for microcomputer systems. The uPD65881GB-P0x series includes a universal synchronous/asynchronous receiver transmitter (USART), a programmable timer/counter and a parallel interface unit (PIU) for standard applications such as computers, office equipment, communications equipment, test and measurement equipment, and home electronic appliances. Based on NEC Electronics’ established 0.5-micron CMOS process, the ASSPs are functionally compatible with the industry-known uPD7105x and uPD825x support chips and provide designers with an easy migration path, a stable supply source and long-term product support.

The new devices are designed for operation at 5 volts (V) and are available in a 44-pin plastic quad flat pack (QFP) package. In addition to being lead-free to meet current RoHS regulations, all three devices are qualified to support industrial temperature ranges of -40 to 85 degrees Celsius.

The uPD65881GB-P01 programmable timer/counter (http://www.am.necel.com/upd65881gb_p01_pr) delivers high-performance functionality for control of CPU timing by incorporating a range of features, including three independently operated 16-bit counters and six count modes for each counter. The device is functionally compatible with the previous-generation uPD71054 timer/counter and the uPD8253 programmable interval timer.
The uPD65881GB-P02 USART (http://www.am.necel.com/upd65881gb_p02_pr) is capable of synchronous, asynchronous or bisynchronous serial communication with standard microcontrollers (MCUs). Features include low-power standby mode, error detection for parity, overrun and framing and compatibility with the previous-generation uPD71051 and uPD8251 USARTs.
The uPD65881GB-P03 PIU (http://www.am.necel.com/upd65881gb_p03_pr) delivers operations ranging from basic input/output up to high-level handshake protocols. The PIU is MCU-compatible and features three 8-bit I/O ports, three programmable operating modes and no-wait operation. The new device is compatible with the previous-generation uPD71055 unit and the uPD8255 programmable peripheral interface chip.
