PMC-Sierra Announces Industry's First Demonstration of 10G EPON for Next-Generation Fiber to the Home
Posted on: Wednesday, 25 June 2008, 06:01 CDT
PMC-Sierra, Inc. (Nasdaq:PMCS) today announced the industry's first demonstration of 10Gbit/s IEEE 802.3av EPON. The demonstration -- based on PMC-Sierra's complete reference designs for 10Gbit/s EPON, which include the PAS8001 for 10G Optical Line Terminals (OLT) and the PAS9001 for 10G Optical Network Units (ONU) -- was conducted at OptiNet China, May 28-29, in Beijing, China. The reference designs integrate all the functionality required from an OLT and ONU running at 10Gbit/s, including third-party commercial transceivers, and leverage PMC-Sierra's market-leading EPON capabilities to improve system performance and reduce OEMs' time to market.
"CTC developed an EPON enterprise standard that has driven chipset and equipment vendors to ensure their solutions successfully achieve interoperability with it," said Wang Bo, senior business associate manager of the Technical Department of China Telecom (CTC). "As a result, we have started quantity deployment. We are very interested in the new 10G EPON specification, IEEE 802.3av, and look forward to a version supporting unique CTC features, ensuring 10G EPON interoperability and a future smooth upgrade path from 1G EPON."
The availability of 10Gbit/s EPON systems will enable carriers to further expand their Triple Play services, Fiber-To-The-Building (FTTB) solutions, and lay the foundation for future bandwidth-demanding applications. In addition, carriers will be able to reduce capital and operating expenses by unifying their FTTH and FTTB infrastructures.
PMC-Sierra's PAS8001 and PAS9001 deliver 10Gbit/s performance, pre-standard IEEE 802.3av compliance, 1G/10G co-existence with auto-detect, standard encryption, high performance backward-compatible Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) and commercially viable transceivers developed by a leading transceiver vendor partner. PMC-Sierra's 10G solution can operate in a split ratio of up to 128 ONUs per OLT. As the next generation of PMC-Sierra's market-leading EPON devices, these new solutions coexist with more than six million EPON ONUs deployed worldwide that are based on PMC-Sierra's devices.
10G EPON White Paper
"10G EPON Brings Advantages to the Fiber Access Network," a white paper that details how 10G EPON technology will spur deployment of next-generation HD IPTV and other high-bandwidth applications, by Lior Khermosh, chief system architect for PMC-Sierra's FTTH business and Gilad Aloni, PMC-Sierra EPON product manager, is available for download at http://www.pmc-sierra.com/ftth-pon (registration required).

About PMC-Sierra's FTTH Family of Products
PMC-Sierra is the only supplier to support both EPON (IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet in the First Mile) and GPON (ITU-T G.984) standards. The Company's gigabit PON products are based on the robust GigaPASS(TM) FTTH Architecture that achieves sustained gigabit and greater data rates while providing a powerful 32-bit programmable processing engine executing the real-time operating system, middleware, and application-specific firmware required for high performance FTTH network access functions. PMC-Sierra system-on-chip solutions provide end-to-end gigabit per second bandwidth solutions linking central office equipment and customer premise equipment. Optical line terminal (OLT) devices connect the central office to the PON network and optical network unit (ONU) or optical network terminal (ONT) devices connect customer premises to the PON network.
