NTT East Hopes to Reach 10 M. Fiber-Optic Subscribers Early

Tokyo, June 26 (Jiji Press)--Nippon Telegraph & Telephone East Corp. hopes to increase the number of subscribers to its fiber- optic broadband services to 10 million as early as possible, its new president, Tsutomu Ebe, said Thursday.

Ebe made the comment at a press conference in reference to the company's goal of increasing the number to 11.4 million by the end of March 2011 from 5.27 million at the end of May.

The company, known as NTT East, one of the two regional fixed- line units of Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp. .

NTT East and NTT West Corp., the other fixed-line unit, seek to achieve combined subscribers of 20 million at the end of March 2011.

Ebe sounded negative about lowering fiber-optic charges, saying that it would be hard to use large-scale price cuts as a tool for boosting subscribers.END
