Jul. 1–Conway National Bank is warning customers and non-customers to beware of an e-mail and phone scam involving the bank.

Over the weekend and Monday, people have reported receiving phone calls with a recorded message telling them that Conway National Bank has suspended their accounts. The message asks people to call a number to respond.

Bank officials say this is a scam — a way for thieves to try to get people’s personal information, such as bank account numbers, ATM cards and credit cards.

The bank also says fraudulent Web sites have been created using the bank’s name. E-mails generated from those sites requesting personal information have been sent out. The e-mails say the reader has a message from Conway National Bank and asks them to “click here” to access it, or it contains messages saying people’s accounts have been suspended.

Conway National Bank officials say they would not send e-mail directing people to other Web sites, nor would they ask for confidential information.

They want people to be aware that they should not click on any links in the e-mails, but simply delete them.

They also say anyone who did complete the fake survey and provide account information should call the bank’s security department at 248-5721. People who gave out debit card or credit card numbers are asked to call (800) 556-5678 to get a new card issued.

Bank president Jennings Duncan said the scammers are using contact information they find online.

Staff writer Jessica Foster contributed to this report.
