Fujitsu has announced plans to move its printed circuit board (PCB) business from its Solihull, UK-based Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Ltd (FTEL) to Fujitsu Network Communications (FNC) in the US.

It said continuing volatility in demand for products in the global telecommunications market was the main reason for the transfer, which will result in a loss of about 100 jobs. FTEL will retain its assembly and test activities at the Solihull plant.

Earlier this year, the company transferred its photonics manufacturing and product development businesses to its wholly owned subsidiary Fujitsu Access. In May, it opened a $17m center of excellence in Northern Ireland creating 150 jobs.

Tony Oppenheim, COO at Fujitsu, said: “The transfer protects the long-term interests of the business and the wider workforce. The global market requires us to be more flexible, and we have identified additional new jobs in Solihull to accommodate the job cuts.” The transfer will be completed by year end.
