Global Download Hit Proves Just Spot On

July 5, 2008

The release of Two Spot Gobi’s download single Sunshine Lady, on the IRL label, has been hailed as a great success not only in terms of quantity shifted, but also in raising the band’s profile generally.

The Brighton-based six-piece, whose lead singer James Robinson is Plymouth born and bred, launched the single at London’s Bush Hall (which was streamed online with an audience of more than 1,000) and at the Ride Marquee in Plymouth two weeks ago.

Having picked up some valuable national media coverage they went on to sell enough copies to clinch the number one position in the Play.com chart for the whole of the first week of release.

Among other things, this included being listed as one of the top five downloads of the week in the Sunday Times Culture section, a six-page feature in Sound On Sound, several airings on Talk Sport plus a mention on Steve Lamacq’s Radio 6 show.

Last week their single reached the ears of American Hollywood gossip blogger Perez Hilton, also a regular on Radio 1′s Switch show, who said: “If the fusion of funk and pop sounds appeal to you then you will love Two Spot Gobi.

“Their single Sunshine Lady has all the ingredients to be the perfect summer jam.”

His blog alone drew 8,000 hits on their MySpace site in eight hours, winning them a bunch of new fans as well as offers of gigs in New York and LA.

The official Sunshine Lady promo, shot on the rooftop of a swanky apartment in London, can already be seen via their MySpace site, but an alternative video, made by Alan Tibbitts of Video Ex Productions and shot at Two Spot’s Plymouth Jelly Jazz gig (part of the International Jazz and Blues Festival), with further footage of James taken the following day on Tregantle Beach, is available as of this week for Herald readers and on the website What’s On South West.

The video features our own West Country “sunshine lady”, Plymouth actress Ellie Conrad Leigh, who has appeared in national TV series and who, incidentally, happens to be getting married in the city this week.

To watch the alternative promo visit www.whatsonsouthwest.co.uk, and for more info on the band and to see their official London video go to www.myspace.com/twospotgobi.

James will be performing a solo slot at Favela (formerly Good Companions) on Monday night.
