BCCC Set to Move on Renewal Plan

Jul. 8–Baltimore City Community College is moving forward in its effort to redevelop its Inner Harbor campus, announcing yesterday that the school is accepting proposals from developers to make over up to 2.3 acres of the site.
Last year, the school’s leaders considered putting that campus up for sale and established a task force to help them realize the property’s value.
The valuable site, at the northwest corner of Lombard Street and Market Place, is two blocks from the Inner Harbor. The school’s leaders have said that the buildings at the campus are outdated, cramped and in need of a multimillion-dollar reconstruction.
BCCC’s main campus is in the 2900 block of Liberty Heights Ave.
Representatives from BCCC could not be reached last night for comment.
In the request for proposals, the college said it intends to keep a component of the final development as part of its operations, though it is unknown whether classes will remain at that site.
The proposals are to incorporate the 1.1-acre Holocaust Memorial, which is owned by BCCC, or create an enhanced memorial within the project. The college will review plans with the Holocaust Memorial Park Committee.
The college is accepting proposals until Sept. 26.
BCCC had success in another downtown property deal when it leased its Lockwood site on Pratt Street to developers who built a shopping center that includes Best Buy, Filene’s and restaurants.
