Windows XP Discontinuation Results in Mixed OS Enterprise Remote Access Environments; Causes Security Policy Concerns
Posted on: Tuesday, 8 July 2008, 09:00 CDT
Leading provider of endpoint security and VPN solutions, NCP engineering GmbH, announced today that their customers will remain unaffected by the June 30, 2008 discontinuation of Microsoft Windows XP operating system (OS). The gradual erosion of a single OS convention within the enterprise until the conversion process to Vista is completed will have a ripple effect throughout the IT security and policy ecosystem.
Microsoft's Announcement
Beginning June 30, 2008 PC and laptop computer manufacturers will no longer be provided Windows XP for pre-installation, nor will retailers continue to offer boxed versions of the OS once existing inventories are exhausted. Further, the Redmond, CA company has set an end date for all support for its XP OS, 2014.
To accommodate for this change in the enterprise OS landscape, NCP has built its Secure Clients since Version 9.0 for compatibility with Microsoft Vista (in 32 bit and 64 bit modes). This VPN client is also compatible with Windows 2000 and XP (in 32 bit and 64 bit modes). Customers running older versions of NCP Secure Clients can download a simple update for Vista compatibility, maintaining existing policy settings, access rules and user-defined preferences.
A 30-day trial version of NCP Secure Entry Client offering unrestricted use and Microsoft Vista compatibility is available online at: http://www.ncp-e.com/en/downloads/software.html.
