NUI and Alcatel-Lucent Launch WiMAX Rev-E Network Service in Ireland

Posted on: Thursday, 10 July 2008, 09:00 CDT

National University of Ireland and Alcatel-Lucent have launched WiMAX Rev-e network service in Ireland. The project, funded by the Centre for Telecommunications Value Chain Research, marks a milestone in the deployment of a super-fast, wireless network based on WiMAX Rev-e technology in the country.

According to Alcatel-Lucent, its WiMAX solution will enable National University of Ireland (NUI) Maynooth staff, students and other Irish researchers to benefit from 'always-on' broadband services, including VoIP services and new, mobile high-speed data services such as DVD-quality streaming video, fast downloads of very large files as well as video-conferencing.

For this project, Alcatel-Lucent provided NUI Maynooth with a turnkey infrastructure solution, including WiMAX Rev-e radio access, base stations, wireless access controllers, and an operation and maintenance center (OMC) as well as services including network planning and engineering, deployment, integration optimization and maintenance.

Kevin O'Callaghan, managing director of Alcatel-Lucent, Ireland, said: "This project highlights Alcatel-Lucent's continued leadership in the introduction of enhanced next-generation communications solutions. As one of the very first deployments of the kind, it will further enhance our knowledge of WiMAX usage in such environments and through this partnership, we look forward to discovering new and innovative applications."
