Cablevision Offers Customers Sprint Cell Phone Service
May 3–Cablevision Systems Corp. has started offering its customers Sprint cell phone service through its online shopping site.
The offer includes a $70 rebate for each new Sprint wireless line that customers order through a phone number listed at Optimum Store Online and maintain at least 30 days.
Several cable TV providers have considered bundling their own services, including high-speed Internet access and Internet-based phone service, with outside wireless providers such as Sprint, possibly on a single bill. Some providers are conducting trials with Sprint.
A Cablevision spokesman said there are no immediate plans for such an arrangement, but the company is open to exploring the possibility.
Cablevision had launched its own wireless service called Northcoast Communications in several states but agreed to sell its 50 transmission licenses to Verizon Wireless in 2002.
