MCI Selects Nakina Systems to Provide Next Generation Operational Support Software
Posted on: Tuesday, 3 May 2005, 09:00 CDT
Nakina Systems Inc., an Ottawa-based independent software vendor, and MCI have signed a purchase agreement for Nakina to supply next-generation operational support software (OSS) for MCI's Common Element Management System (CEMS).
CEMS is MCI's innovative management platform that is designed to efficiently and cost-effectively manage network elements when performing maintenance on the network. CEMS provides a common viewing and control point for multiple vendors' network elements that enables a consistent user interface and skill level for network operators while accelerating the deployment of new devices in the network.
The first two phases of the CEMS, which is already in service, include deploying a consolidated graphical user interface and centrally-controlled multi-vendor Element Management System (EMS) applications. Additional phases of the project are scheduled for 2005 and beyond and include multi-vendor commissioning, performance management, and security applications.
MCI's deployment of Nakina(TM) Open Console, a graphical user interface environment, along with Nakina(TM) Security Management and other Nakina(TM) Multi-Vendor EMS applications, provide MCI with the following benefits:
-- Substantially reduced diagnosis-and-repair time by leveraging a rich graphical interface tied to a near real-time view of MCI's multi-vendor network;
-- Faster and more reliable network software upgrades through accurate network audits and automated software delivery;
-- Simple yet highly secure user management across a multitude of devices and release levels;
-- Reach-through support for all provisioning;
-- Near real-time inventory of network elements, providing visibility that allows for maximum utilization of network capacity;
-- Real-time updates on changes made to MCI's inside plant engineering system;
-- Reduced training, application and operating system support, and server support costs.
"Nakina's thorough knowledge of large scale telecom networks and operational processes provide them the foundation to consistently deliver high-quality software products in a timely fashion," said Joe Cook, Senior Vice President, MCI Network Systems Engineering. "CEMS is the advanced software tool which allows MCI network management staff to optimize our diverse network facilities and maintain the quality of service our customers expect."
MCI plans to expand and enhance CEMS functionality during 2005 with the deployment of Nakina(TM) Discovery and additional Nakina(TM) Multi-Vendor EMS applications, to include commissioning, performance management, and security enhancements. Expected benefits include:
-- Hundreds of hours saved for every new system turned up via automated commissioning;
-- Unprecedented visibility of network topology and physical inventory discovered directly from the network without any manual entry;
-- Elimination of the need to purchase and maintain multiple element management systems.
"MCI's selection represents a major win for Nakina in a highly competitive selection process and re-affirms the extensive experience Nakina brings to the table with off-the-shelf management software. We look forward to continued work with MCI, an industry thought leader, to deliver highly innovative solutions that enable improved operating efficiencies and customer responsiveness," said Dave Vicary, President and CEO of Nakina.
