Jul. 21--ICANN EASES ON DOMAIN NAMES: Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) has relaxed the rules on internet domain names, which may eventually allow the creation of millions of unique web addresses based on common words, brands, company names, cities or even proper names. Under the new rules, domain names can be based on any string of letters, so that even Dubai could be a viable domain name.

QATAR CLEARS VOIP POLICY: ictQATAR has clarified it does not prohibit the use of VoIP within Qatar for any person or business, for their own use. However, it is illegal for any person or business to sell VoIP calls or services to the public or businesses without a license issued by ictQATAR. Currently, only QTel and Vodafone are licensed to offer services for that purpose.

MOBILY PROFITS UP BY 40 PERCENT IN H1: Etihad Etisalat (Mobily) has announced net profits of SR774m for the first half of the year, 40 percent higher than last year's results of SR554m for the same period. Earnings per share grew 25 percent from SR1.11 to SR1.55 over the period.

OMANTEL INKS CABLE DEAL WITH MENA: Omantel has entered an agreement with the Middle East and North Africa Company (MENA) of Egypt for the laying of 8,000km submarine fibre optics cable on the Omani coast, Khaleej Times has reported. The cable aims to benefit Oman's international connection, as the cable passes through locations including Sicily, Italy, Crete, Alexandria and Suez in Egypt, Jeddah and India.
