Grant Will Be Used to Buy Oil Exploration Software
The University of Plymouth has been awarded a grant of nearly 500,000 for software which helps detect oil beneath the ground.
Texas company Seismic Micro- Technology Inc has awarded the School of Earth, Ocean and Environmental Sciences 477,159 to buy computer programmes which interpret seismic data to uncover petroleum reserves. It will use the software in exercises simulating oil exploration using data donated by oil companies.
Lecturer Matthew Watkinson, who was instrumental in securing the grant, said these skills would make graduates very attractive to potential employers in a lucrative but competitive business.
“There is a growing demand for graduate geoscientists due to the rapidly escalating price of oil and metals”, he said.
