Tokyo stocks close sharply higher
TOKYO, July 22 (Xinhua) — Tokyo stocks closed sharply higher Tuesday, with the key Nikkei index going back to the 13,000 level for the first time since July 14.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average leaped 381.26 points, or 2. 98 percent, from Friday to 13,184.96.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 35.31 points, or 2.82 percent, to 1, 287.74.
Value leader Mizuho Financial Group rose 18,000 yen, over 3 percent, to 559,000 yen.
On the First Section, advancing issues outnumbered declining ones 1,407 to 259, with 55 others remaining unchanged.
Trading volume on the main section went up to 1,850.99 million shares from Friday’s 1,793.77 million.
The TSE’s Second Section index declined 7.90 points, or 0.29 percent, to 2,740.53 on a volume of 33.09 million shares.
On the Osaka Securities Exchange, the near-term September Nikkei 225 index futures contract was up 350 points to 13,200.
