Jul. 24–MCHENRY — Visitors to the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce Web site will notice a change, as the site now features a Career Opportunities section.

The section was put together through the Garrett County Workforce Development Committee and the Career Task Force Subcommittee as well as the chamber.

“We have an excellent school system, and we invest so much in our students, but do we do anything to maintain that relationship?” Jeannette Rudy Fitzwater, senior vice president of First United Bank and task force subcommittee member, said. “We should be bringing that talent back to the county and growing our work force. Students assume there aren’t opportunities here and our goal is to prove that there are opportunities for them.”

According to Karen Reckner, director of business services and training for the chamber, the Workforce Development Committee was formed to define the needs of the county work force as well as creating and promoting opportunities to improve the local work force skills.

Reckner said that setup of the site wasn’t difficult. She said that the businesses fill out a basic form that is then put online in a “viewer-friendly” format.

Charlie Ross, CEO and president of the chamber, said that he was glad to see this change come about.

“I actually wanted it from the first moment that I arrived at the chamber, but we were trying to do something that would not duplicate a service,” Ross said. “It was an advanced service.”

Reckner said they tried to ensure they didn’t step on the toes of any existing organizations or businesses like the Garrett County One-Stop Job Center and the Western Maryland Consortium.

Fitzwater said that, instead, they are working with them in this change.

This addition to the Web site is the first part of a three-phase process.

By spring of 2009, they hope to allow people to post their resumes on the chamber site, and by May, they will develop a quality-of-life page to profile local businesses, including their recruitment needs, growth plans and internships.

The career opportunities section at www.garrettchamber.com lists job openings from chamber members, who may submit job postings to Reckner at (301) 387-4386, ext. 12 or e-mail karen@garrettchamber.com.
