Verizon's Wholesale Network Unit Bags the Frost & Sullivan 2005 Market Leadership Award

Posted on: Monday, 16 May 2005, 09:00 CDT

Frost & Sullivan's recent analysis, North American Wholesale Special Access Markets, selected Verizon Communications, Inc. (Verizon Wholesale Markets) as the recipient of the 2005 Market Leadership Award. Verizon's remarkable foresight in developing solutions to satisfy customer needs has made it the market leader for special access products.

Every year, Frost & Sullivan presents this Award to the company that has exhibited market share leadership through the implementation of market strategy. The Award acknowledges excellence in all areas of the market leadership process, including the identification of industry challenges, market drivers and restraints, as well as strategy development and methods of addressing these market dynamics.

Verizon is one of the largest telecommunication providers in the United States, operating in 29 states. The company reported revenues of $71.3 billion in 2004 and its fiber-optic circuits cover more distance than any other local and long distance provider in the Unites States. Meanwhile, Verizon Wireless is a 100 percent digital network vendor that serves customers in 65 of the top 100 U.S. markets.

"The company's success is the product of careful and meticulous planning," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Vinod Ramanathan. "Thanks to its strong financial performance year on year, Verizon has been able to pull out all stops in providing the highest quality network and has invested over $12 billion in maintaining and upgrading this network."

Verizon Wholesale Markets, Verizon's wholesale network unit, has shown the same dedication and perseverance in serving and supporting its special access customer base. Besides its strong year on year growth for the special access products, Verizon has made remarkable strides in its synchronous optical network (SONET) offerings.

"With the economy rebounding and a robust growth seen by the wireless carriers, Verizon has had another successful year, especially for special access products, which have consistently contributed to the overall profitability of the company," notes Ramanathan.

Verizon Wholesale Markets provides a targeted suite of special access products and services. It addresses the long distance service providers, local service providers, wireless carriers, and the Internet service providers. It closely monitors the customer requirements and is willing to go the "extra mile" to provide tailor-made solutions that meet the needs of the customer.

A case in point would be the product suite offered to long distance providers. For instance, Verizon Optical Networking is specifically built to support Ethernet capabilities and many of its other optical service offerings are meant to provide reliable, high-speed connectivity between locations. In each and every case, Verizon has been proactive instead of reactive to market changes.

This is evidenced in Verizon's deployment of a national IP/MPLS network that allows customers to interconnect across a converged backbone through a wide choice of access technologies (private line, Ethernet, frame relay, and ATM) -- providing customers with greater geographic reach and access flexibility.

"We are pleased to have earned the 2005 Market Leadership Award," said Quintin Lew, vice president of Verizon Wholesale Markets. "This Award recognizes the commitment of the Verizon Wholesale team to deliver excellent special access solutions, and we will continue to work hard each and every day to meet our world-class service goals."

In conclusion, Verizon Wholesale Markets has the inherent flexibility and associated cost savings required to meet the needs of its customers from both a flexibility and cost management perspective. For these achievements, it is the deserving recipient of Frost & Sullivan's 2005 Market Leadership Award.
