QLogic and Engenio Qualify Newest 4Gb/S Storage Infrastructure to Meet Tomorrow's Consolidation and Data Migration Demands

Posted on: Monday, 16 May 2005, 09:00 CDT

MILPITAS, Calif., May 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Engenio Information Technologies, Inc., a global provider of innovative and highly scalable modular storage systems for the open enterprise, today announced that QLogic's SANbox 5602 stackable switch has earned compatibility certification with Engenio's first to market 6998 4-Gigabit per second (4Gb/s) Fibre Channel storage system. The stackable Fibre Channel switch is also compatible with Engenio's 1Gb/s and 2Gb/s Fibre Channel products.

The SANbox 5602 delivers seamless scalability and performance in an easy- to-manage, pay-as-you-grow solution. The stackable switch is configurable from an 8-port entry solution up to the 16-port high performance solution. With ease of use management wizards and the 4 10Gb/s stacking ports this solution can scale to 64 4Gb/s ports.

"Today, customers are requiring higher performance to meet the demands of consolidating and protecting an increasing amount of data," said Julie Ryan, Engenio Manager of Alliances. "Certification of QLogic's SANbox 5602 switch enables customers to combine the state of the art 4Gb/s switch with Engenio's newest 4Gb/s Fibre Channel array providing the storage infrastructure to scale for tomorrow's most demanding application and data migration needs. The 5602 is fully backwards compatible with Engenio's 1Gb/s and 2Gb/s Fibre Channel storage solutions, providing investment protection for existing Fibre Channel infrastructure."

On April 12, Engenio announced ( http://www.engenio.com/default.aspx?pageID=746 ) the industry's first 4Gb/s Fibre Channel array. The 6998 features sixth generation system technology and offers extensive capabilities and functionality including broad support for operating systems and host types, extensive configuration flexibility and advanced replication services such as Snapshot, remote volume mirroring and volume copying. The 6998 controller combines faster processors, busses, and memory to deliver the highest levels of performance. The 6998 is based on Engenio's new XBB(TM) architecture and its innovative, flexible host interface module technology reduces time to market -- enabling quicker adaptation to new technologies. The 6998-based systems include eight 4Gb/s host-side and eight 4Gb/s drive-side ports, doubling the connectivity of its predecessor and providing more interfaces into a SAN and to the drives.

The SANbox 5602 Fibre Channel stackable switch has 8, 12 or 16 auto- detecting 4Gb/2Gb/1Gb per second device ports; four 10Gb/s ports for high- speed stacking links; stacking of up to 4 units for 64 user ports; dual hot- swappable power supplies; full-fabric, public loop or switch-to-switch connectivity on 2Gb/1Gb ports; and non-blocking full-bandwidth architecture. The switch is compatible with Engenio's 2822, 2882, 4884, 5884 and 6998 controllers.

"Engenio is leading the way in 4Gb/s storage technology with its recent introduction of the 6998 Fibre Channel array," said Frank Berry, vice president of marketing, QLogic Corp. "As customers begin building their 4Gb/s infrastructures, it is crucial that QLogic's SANbox 5602 switch earn compatibility certification with Engenio. Many customers will be installing Engenio 4Gb/s Fibre Channel storage array technology and QLogic's leading-edge switch technology will provide them with a best-of-breed solution."
