Jul. 30–BANGOR, Maine — The Houlton couple arrested Monday on drug charges on Interstate 95 by Orono police have been released from the Penobscot County Jail on $5,000 unsecured bail apiece.

Oliver Cromwell, 33, and his wife, Carol Cromwell, 33, appeared Tuesday in 3rd District Court, charged with possession of heroin, a Class C crime.

Brigitte Dupont, 39, of Houlton, the woman who was driving the Cromwells’ 1990 Ford Mustang, was released Monday after posting $1,000 cash bail. She was charged with operating after suspension and possession of cocaine.

If convicted, each defendant faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000 on the drug possession charges.

The three are scheduled to appear in Penobscot County Superior Court in mid-September unless they are indicted by the Penobscot County grand jury before then.

A search of the Cromwells’ car Tuesday did not turn up more drugs or other evidence, according to Orono police.

The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency issued a bulletin Monday asking law enforcement officers to be on the lookout for the couple and the Mustang, according to court documents. MDEA agents suspected that the Cromwells had gone to Connecticut to pick up heroin for resale.

Orono officers stopped the vehicle allegedly going 75 mph north on I-95 in a 65 mph zone after spotting it from the Kelley Road overpass.

The couple’s two sons, ages 5 and 11, were in the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services on Tuesday. The younger child was with the parents when they were arrested.
