Report: IBM Ranked #1 in Web Portal Software Market
IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that analyst firm IDC has ranked IBM as the worldwide market share leader in the enterprise portal software market over Oracle, BEA and Microsoft, based on license and maintenance revenue.(1)
IDC projects that the enterprise portal software market will expand to $2.0 billion by 2012. According to IDC, the enterprise portal software market grew nearly 18.3 percent in 2007 with license and maintenance revenue of $1.2 billion.(1)
Hundreds of IBM business partners, resellers and other software companies pair IBM’s Web 2.0-enhanced WebSphere Portal software with their own information technology (IT) products for a variety of clients worldwide.
IBM also announced today that it has begun shipping the latest version of its WebSphere Portal software, version 6.1. Designed to securely combine information from both corporate enterprises and the Web, the new software has Web 2.0 features that help people be more productive and find information faster. Its live text feature allows a user to click on text — in the context of the business process being used — and see supporting information related to the job at hand. For example, when a salesperson clicks on the address of a client, a map with driving directions could appear, or an electronic business card could pop up when clicking on a person’s name.
ARX Technologies is an IBM Advanced Business Partner using the latest version of IBM portal software to serve its customers. Since its inception in 1974, the Arlington, Texas-based company has provided software to public sector and electric, water, gas and other utility organizations, to help them with a variety of tasks including billing, payroll, public works and community development. ARX Technologies has worked closely with IBM to incorporate IBM’s latest technology into its new, browser-based products. Through the use of this ARX software, local governments and utilities are able to enhance and improve their work flow, which allows them to streamline their work processes.
“We’ve gone through a massive product modernization and now have a browser-based product based on IBM’s latest WebSphere Portal software. Version 6.1 has allowed us to have a product ideal for our government customers. In addition, we’ve been able to get rid of those archaic icons and drab gray screens,” said Charlotte Foulkes, Chief Technology Officer, ARX. She added that when IBM’s portal is running, users don’t have to close screens and select icons. Instead, they can easily navigate to quickly find what they need. “For example, it is easy to move from the weather report, to instant messaging, to the Federal Emergency Management Agency Web site,” added Foulkes.
Germany-based Fritz & Macziol is another IBM partner using IBM portal software to serve its customers. The company provides software, systems and services to a variety of private sector and government organizations including banks, insurance agencies and local authorities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
“Fritz & Macziol has been able to double its portal-related service revenue since we started using IBM WebSphere Portal technology to serve our customers,” said Anja Beckmann, Team leader, Middleware and Portal Technology, Fritz & Macziol.
New York-based Prolifics is another IBM business partner using the latest version of IBM’s portal software to serve its customers. Prolifics provides expert services including architectural advisement, design, development, and deployment, assisting customers with their service oriented architecture (SOA) initiatives. SOA is a business strategy that helps a company reuse existing technology to more closely align it with business goals resulting in greater efficiencies, cost savings, agility and productivity. Since its inception in New York City in 1978, Prolifics has serviced more than 3,000 customers worldwide, including Wall Street firms and government agencies. It has more than 225 portals customers and approximately 40 percent of its revenue comes from this arena.
“We’ve had phenomenal success partnering with IBM in the portal arena. Since we’ve incorporated IBM WebSphere Portal technology into our product mix, we’ve seen a dramatic increase in our portal-related revenue,” said Prolifics’ CEO Nicolas Jabbour.
“The new IBM portal Web 2.0 interface is a leap forward,” said Craig Smith, Managing Director of UK-based OpenLogic. He added that new features such as site management and integration with software such as IBM Lotus Quickr, IBM Lotus Domino, IBM WebSphere Process Server and Microsoft Exchange are compelling many of his customers to migrate to the latest version of IBM’s portal software. OpenLogic delivers IT products based on WebSphere Portal to many blue-chip customers in the automotive, telecommunications, education and other industries.
IBM recently enabled clients to experiment with the latest version of WebSphere Portal software through IBM Lotus Greenhouse, a Web site where anyone can register to try out IBM WebSphere Portal, IBM’s new Mashup Center, Lotus Connections, Lotus Quickr and Lotus Sametime. This provides clients with a safe and easy way to evaluate these products without installing them in their own environments.
