Philips Introduces High-Performance Transflective LCD Module for Brilliant Picture Quality in Mobile Phones

Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE:PHG)(AEX:PHI) today unveiled a high-performance transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) module for increased picture quality in high-end mobile phones. Built to enhance consumers' viewing experience with applications such as TV on mobile and mobile video players, the Nemesis P8894-I features the industry's first implementation of Philips' LifePix(TM) unique patented algorithms designed around how the human eye perceives color. It is compliant with the Series 60 (S60) Platform that is built on the Symbian operating system (OS) to assist manufacturers with faster time-to-market. The display module is designed in 41.2 mm x 53.8 mm screen size, has built-in low-power features and combines excellent color quality with backlighting for increased readability in all external conditions, even direct sunlight.

Higher performance display technology in mobile phones have become more increasingly important to the consumer and, as a result, features such as large screen size, increased color quality, screen resolution and low power consumption are more prevalent in the market. With LifePix(TM) built into Philips' Nemesis P8894-I, the low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistor (TFT) display module includes a smart color mapping algorithm that offers the most complete color-enhancing solution on the market for optimal brightness and color.

As consumer demands for smaller, fully functional mobile phones increases, manufacturers will depend on technology standardization to help them speed time-to-market. Through its compliance with S60 and Symbian OS, Philips' Nemesis P8894-I is compatible with various hardware designs and software configurations. The display module, supporting all S60 Symbian software and applications, is the combination of advanced display technology in a very compact mechanical package with an easy-to-use software interface that is ideal for new mobile services such as rich content downloading and multimedia messaging.

In a common intermediate format plus (CIF+) 352RGB x 416 resolution 2.1-inch display size, the Nemesis P8894-I, with approximately 259 pixels per square inch (ppi), is considerably sharper than a quarter CIF+ (QCIF+) with 130 ppi, and it has twice the number of pixels compared to a quarter VGA (QVGA) display of the same size with 190 ppi. In addition to a unique in-cell reflectance, Philips' video enhancing LifePix(TM) is built in to the display module significantly enhancing the LCD's perceived color performance by more than 40 percent previously capable. This results in an overall increase in display visibility.

Availability

Philips' Nemesis P8894-1 is currently available. The display comes complete with all the necessary interfaces and can be delivered with or without a metal frame.
