New XO Ethernet Hub Delivers Affordable, Scalable Bandwidth to Carriers Seeking to Expand Their Ethernet Services Footprint

August 4, 2008

XO Communications, a leading provider of 21st century communications for businesses and communications service providers, today announced it has launched its Ethernet Hub service for domestic and international carriers seeking to expand the reach of their Ethernet services in the United States. Ethernet is a well-understood and widely used technology and is projected to grow to a $25 billion market by 2010, according to Infonetics Research, an international market research and consulting firm specializing in data networking and telecom. Because XO’s Ethernet Hub requires no conversion or protocol changes by domestic or international carriers, technology deployment and management is easy, and the cost of equipment is low, enabling carriers to deliver affordable Ethernet services to their customers.

Unlike services that are oversubscribed, XO Ethernet Hub offers dedicated access to XO’s extensive Ethernet footprint, including Ethernet over Copper, through a single connection. This revolutionary Ethernet over Copper delivery option is one of the service’s key advantages as it goes beyond the traditional fiber network and expands customers’ reach to nearly 4 million commercial buildings nationwide. XO’s Ethernet Hub supports a variety of Ethernet bandwidth options, ranging from 5Mbps to 10Gbps. XO’s Ethernet Service also supports 802.1Q, VLAN stacking and jumbo frames — all aimed at providing carriers the most cost-effective, accessible and scalable way to reach their customers with Ethernet services.

“XO Communications is dedicated to meeting the growing technology and bandwidth needs of our customers and carriers. By offering the new Ethernet Hub, we are continuing to push our technology forward, providing our clients with the most innovative and advanced solutions across our large Ethernet footprint,” said Ernie Ortega, president of XO Carrier Services. “In this case, XO is at the forefront of maximizing an existing and widely used technology, Ethernet, to grow and scale our customers’ delivery of Ethernet services to their end-users.”

The XO nationwide network connects 75 major metropolitan markets across the United States. In addition, XO Communications has approximately one million miles of metro fiber networks in major markets across the country. With its extensive nationwide and metro fiber network assets and unrivaled Ethernet over Copper capabilities, XO offers its customers services that allow the door-to-door delivery of Ethernet.
