CyOptics Collaborates With Cray Inc. To Demonstrate Unprecedented Optical Data Transmission Rates for Future Supercomputers; Project Targets Transmission Rates of Hundreds of Gigabits Per Second

Posted on: Tuesday, 24 May 2005, 09:00 CDT

CyOptics, Inc., a leading supplier of high-speed optical engines for broadband communication solutions, announced today that it has been awarded a study contract by Cray Inc. to collaborate in demonstrating unprecedented optical data transmission rates for future-generation supercomputers.

The demonstration project targets rates of hundreds of gigabits per second over optical fiber lines and is related to Cray's participation in the DARPA High Productivity Computing Systems (HPCS) program, which aims to develop high performance computing systems with sustained performance of one petaflop (million billion calculations per second) on real-world applications by 2010.

"CyOptics' technology leadership and precision manufacturing enable us to pursue this key development needed to realize cost-effective, high-bandwidth computing at large scale," stated Ed Coringrato, President and CEO of CyOptics. "This demonstration will make use of next generation uncooled InP laser technology, Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) and high precision automated assembly processes to demonstrate cost-effective, ultrahigh-speed bi-directional data transfer between co-located computing chassis."

"Next generation scientific computing system performance is limited by the rate at which data may be exchanged between processors using conventional copper-based technologies. Cray has long understood this fundamental limitation and looks forward to working with CyOptics to overcome it in order to advance high performance computing," said Burton Smith, Chief Scientist of Cray Inc.

About CyOptics

Founded in 1999, CyOptics is a full line supplier of InP chips and laser and detector components for broadband access, metro and long haul communications systems. CyOptics is an industry leader in the design, development and manufacture of next-generation optical engines that are five times smaller than the current industry standard components, in order to maximize the functional density/price. CyOptics optical engines also require less electrical operating power and have wider operating temperature ranges than traditional solutions. High-volume production is enabled by using a highly flexible, "nano-tech" capable robotic manufacturing process that delivers high uniformity and low cost. The CyOptics team consists of industry veterans that have had management and technology positions with key players including Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies and National Semiconductor. The Company's wafer/chip fabrication operations are located in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania and Yokneam Illit, Israel, while its automated packaging and testing operations are located in Matamoros, Mexico. CyOptics is ISO 9001:2000 certified. For more information, please visit www.cyoptics.com or call 1-610-336-5758.
