Frost & Sullivan will present Intel Corporation's Optical Platform Division with the 2005 Electronic Components Product of the Year Award at tonight's Excellence in Industrial Technologies Banquet.
Intel receives the award for its high-quality, reliable, and cost-effective dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) laser -- the Intel(R) TTX11500 full C-band tunable laser -- which is used in optical transceivers and discrete line card designs for metro and long haul optical transport systems.
The Optical Platform Division is a part of Intel's Communications Infrastructure Group. Working in conjunction with the Optical Networking Components Division, the Optical Platform Division is synergistically involved in providing innovative and cost-effective solutions for the opto-electronic networking components market segment.
As the only tunable laser available in the market today that has successfully integrated the high optical performance of an external cavity laser design with the reliability of non-moving tuning elements, the Intel(R) TTX11500 has a number of advantages over its competitors.
"Its external cavity laser design provides the best-in-class optical performance with flexible, broadband tuning capabilities, and the absence of moving parts offers high reliability in a wide variety of real-field operation," notes Frost & Sullivan research analyst Projjal Kumar.
While the high output power (greater than 20 Watts) of the tunable laser ensures optimum performance without amplification, its low power dissipation (less than 4 Watts) provides additional benefits in terms of capital and operational savings. Further, by incorporating wavelength locking functionality into the tuning elements, the product offers superior frequency stability with higher than 2.5 GHz frequency accuracy to minimize cross-talk in DWDM channels.
In addition to the substantial cost savings achieved by inventory reduction, some of the other key differentiators that the Intel(R) TTX11500 tunable laser provides are ease of forecasting, improved inventory management, and easier installation of wavelengths for telecommunication transport operators and equipment manufacturers.
One of the foremost challenges facing the tunable laser market segment is the cost of packaging, which averages at 75-80 percent of the total product cost. Packaging costs are also one of the impediments to cost reduction of tunable laser prices relative to fixed laser solutions.
In this regard, Intel's packaging technology finds an attractive application with the Intel(R) TXN11500 tunable laser module.
"The manufacturing platform provides the ability to meet the high reliability, performance, and cost requirements along with the process flexibility to manufacture many different transmitter and receiver interfaces," says Roy. "This allows for the production of an industry-leading product in terms of price and performance in the competitive DWDM laser market segment."
For providing the tunable laser market segment with a solution that has the best price, greatest reliability, and scalability -- the three most critical competitive factors in the tunable laser market segment at present -- Intel's Optical Platform Division is the worthy recipient of the 2005 Product of the Year Award.
Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has demonstrated excellence in the development and product of new products and technologies within its industry. The recipient company should have shown innovation by launching a broad line of emerging products and technologies.
Held in Naples, Fla., Frost & Sullivan's Excellence in Industrial Technologies Awards Banquet honors world-class companies for outstanding performance and achievements in their industries. An annual event, the banquet recognizes the quality and merit of distinguished individuals and companies.
