Absolute and GammaTech Deliver Firmware-Based Anti-Theft and Management for Durabook Notebooks

Posted on: Thursday, 14 August 2008, 09:00 CDT

VANCOUVER, and FREMONT, CA, Aug. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Absolute(R) Software Corporation ("Absolute" or the "Company") (TSX: ABT), the leading provider of firmware-based, patented, Computer Theft Recovery, Data Protection and Secure Asset Tracking(TM) solutions and GammaTech Computer Corporation, a worldwide leading manufacturer of notebook computers, today announced that GammaTech's popular Durabook rugged notebooks are now available with support for Absolute's mobile computer anti-theft and management solution Computrace(R) built in at the factory.

"By design, Durabook mobile PCs are built to spend their working lives out of the office, in the field with military personnel, federal and state employees - and corporate road warriors," said Steven Gau, President of GammaTech. "Our two-year service and support guarantee reflects our confidence that these notebooks can stand up to the spills, drops and other risks outside the office. Absolute's Computrace management and security services are an ideal complement to the Durabook's performance and durability."

Effective immediately, GammaTech has begun embedding support for Absolute's patented Computrace technology in the firmware of popular Durabook models. Computrace-enabled models include the D14RY, D15RP and D15TS which allow for optional encrypted hard drives for an additional layer of data security.

With Computrace built in, GammaTech customers have access to the complete range of Absolute's Computrace and Computrace(R) LoJack(R) for Laptops anti-theft and management solutions. Capabilities include the ability to:

- Track and manage computers on the LAN or in the field - Remotely delete sensitive information for regulatory compliance - Physically recover lost or stolen computers - Easily inventory all computers regardless of their location - Remotely inventory software licenses - Detect hardware changes or prohibited software installations - Conduct post-theft forensic investigations into computer use

"Mobile employees, particular those in federal and state government roles, travel - in automobiles and frequently in high theft areas like airports," said John Livingston, Chairman and CEO of Absolute. "More than 50% of mobile professionals carry confidential company information on their notebook and 12,000 notebooks are lost weekly in U.S. airports alone(1). Absolute provides the industry's standard solution for protecting mobile computer users from this threat. We offer computer users like GammaTech's customers the ability to recover those computers that go missing and remotely delete sensitive information to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands."

How Absolute's Computrace Solutions Work

Computrace software is embedded in the firmware of computers right at the factory for extreme tamper-resistance.(2) The stealthy Computrace Agent is capable of surviving operating system re-installations, as well as hard-drive reformats, replacements and re-imaging. It can be activated by customers when they purchase a subscription with terms ranging from one to four years.

When a computer is stolen, the Absolute Theft Recovery Team uses information sent via Computrace to investigate computer thefts, document evidence and work with local law enforcement to physically recover missing computers and prosecute computer thieves. To augment their investigation, the team uses a powerful set of theft recovery tools developed by Absolute, which include capabilities such as keystroke loggers, cameras, location tracking (Wi-Fi triangulation, GPS) and remote access terminals. These tools are only employed post-theft with express customer authorization and consent and are used exclusively by Absolute's trained professionals in order to protect privacy.
