Textile Designer Weaving Great Success on the Web

One of Derbyshire’s only spinning and weaving teachers has revealed the social networking revolution is helping her business beat the economic slump.

Textile designer Alison Daykin, 53, said she had boosted her business and increased sales through an online networking site for small businesses and individual sellers.

BT Tradespace allows firms to set up a webpage to interact with similar companies or shoppers.

Ms Daykin, of Willington, has been weaving since she was eight years old and set up Alison Yule Textiles five years ago.

She produces hand-woven products designed specially for clients, including wall panels, rugs, cushions, throws and window hangings.

In 2005, she developed her own website to promote her business online, but last year received an e-mail about BT Tradespace.

She said: “I thought it was a really good idea and a great marketing opportunity for a company like mine.

“I now use the blog to stimulate more interest in my products, something I’ve never done before.

“I’ve also used the site to link to complementary businesses, so it’s also helping me build up a company network.”
